We have known many types of cancer. People are well informed about this kind of disease and a lot of concern is attracted by this deadly disease. But there is one type of cancer that not all people know, the periampullary cancer. Actually, there are limited resources around the web or even in books discussing periampullary cancer, where they came from, how do you acquire this cancer, how to prevent it or how to cure it. My attention was called upon this issue when a notable Filipino actor died this morning because of periampullary cancer. But what is periampullary cancer?Looking for the definition of this disease, the only thing you can find about it is that it is "A cancer that forms near the ampulla of Vater (an enlargement of the ducts from the liver and pancreas where they join and enter the small intestine). - cancer.gov". In broad terms, peri(around) ampullary(referring to the ampulla of Vater)cancer is a type of cancer that grows at the start first part of you intestine, the duodenum. It grows a tumor and manifests painless symptoms at the start, but grows very painful when the disease is already spread out. Notable symptoms are weight loss, bleeding of the ampullatory region wherein the stool of the patient usually contains blood.
Starting from the liver, the bile duct sends bile to your intestine. Bile is a liquid that aids in the process of digestion. If the ampulla region has a tumor, the bile will not be able to flow in the intestines and will result in the inflammation of the bile duct, the tube-like structures of the intestine that carry these biles.
This type of cancer is not easily detected. Some may even go unnoticed until the real symptoms are already visible, and if the symptoms are already visible, the cancer is already spreading in your body making it hard to deal with.
The serious thing about this cancer that really needed attention is that it somehow manages to mask itself as another form of disease, thus, the proper medication really needed for periampullatory cancer is not given, and the medication that is given is for another type of disease. Some manifestation of this type of cancer may lead you to think that the patient is undergoing hepatitis, jaundice, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and sometimes just a simple bile abnormality or ordinary stomach aches.
The rate of this disease is considered rare. Only 100 among 100,000 is said to have this disease and only circa 40% of them are said to survive. Treatment of periampullary cancer includes chemotherapy, removal of the tumor or surgical loosening of the bile duct where the obstruction occured, this process is called endoscopic retrograde cholangoi-pancreatography. But doing this is never easy. Once the cancer is already prominent in the patient's body, surgical procedures do not guaranty any good result. And the then painless disease will turn into a very painful suffering, and cause death.
