Preventing Seafood Borne Illnesses

By Dr. Boolittle at 07/14/08 07:18

Seafoods have always been part of my daily diet. Aside from being delicious, they are one of the most nutritious food there is. I can never let a day pass without eating at least a single fish for a day or some mussels or clams.

But recently, a friend told me that eating sea foods nowadays is actually not that safe anymore. This happened after continuous storms and heavy rains hit our country. The reason for his statement is that he fears that many germs and garbage were being coiled up in our oceans due to the storm. Although there were no reports about any threats regarding eating sea foods, I did not believe him. And just tell him ways to counter possible seafood diseases.

First and foremost, for all foods not only for sea foods, it is recommended to wash it with clean water and cook it properly, although that do not guarantee you 100% of being safe. You cannot rely on something as "fresh" because pollution have reached critical levels. The air is polluted, our oceans are polluted, there is no generally safe on earth now.

The fact that most diseases from sea foods are caused by water pollution is an alarming fact we should not be relax about. There were reports indicating that fisheries or rivers with abundant sea food supply for human consumption that are near mercury plants or gold mines are not safe to eat. Our bodies of water have become polluted to the extent that we do not know where to start cleaning them.

You should all be knowledgeable of where do you get your food. Just because it's in the market doesn't mean it's safe to eat. You must know where your favorite food shop get their supplies. Here are more tips you can apply lower the risk of acquiring sea food borne diseases.

  • Clean the fish and cook it properly.
  • If you plan to store fish in your freezer, remove the entrails first before storing it.
  • Deep sea fishes are relatively safe to be eaten raw, but caution is given. Freshwater fishes and those living near human settlements must be thoroughly cook.
  • Know the latest news about foods and your environment. You might not know that there is a red tide or algal bloom in your area and you still buy sea foods. Utmost care is needed.
