Please give us a short summary of your website?
Ask The Neurologist about your neurological symptoms or find teaching and study resources relating to neurology and the neurosciences. Ask the Neurologist only uses board-certified Neurologists and guarantees a professional response within 5-days (average response time 24 hours).
What inspired you to launch your own website?
The lack of quality neurology information for both neurology students and patients.
We wanted to create a site attracting both specialists and patients to ensure both quality and accessibility of information to all.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
This is it!
It was launched mid 2007...I am a neurologist myself and run it in my "spare time"
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Just came to me.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
The combination of professional and consumer focussed quality content.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To carry on working as a neurologist and for this website to grow in parallel with developments in this fast-moving field.
I am also working on diagnostic tools to prevent errors in diagnosis.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Very well thanks.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would hire a professional web designer.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Headaches....they're not unexpected in my line of work!
What has been your biggest challenge?
Driving myself to bed rather than doing more work on my site.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Quality content addition.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It's grown far faster than I would have imagined.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
7 months....never intend to stop.
Can you give an example of one of the diagnostic tools you describe above?
Yes...this one's the most popular. It sorts out dangerous headaches from "benign" (not dangerous) ones and tells you which type of headache you are suffering from:-
