Botfly - Eating Us Alive

By Jesse Aarons at 09/06/08 02:47

I have had the grossest morning of my life. This morning when I woke up I checked my mail and saw 9 new messages in my inbox. I checked them one by one and when I am already at the last one, I hesitated since the title is Graphic Images. But being a curious lad, I still opened it.

The first image almost made me puke. It was an image of a girl with her breast exposed. The breast has holes in it and in the holes you can see white spots. When I read the description, it was a case of breast infestation by parasitic larvae of the African Tumbu Fly. It has a video with it but because it's too graphic, I won't post it here.

Tumbu flies are but one of the many insects or bugs that can live on human flesh as it grows. A more gross and more popular parasitic larvae that infest thousands to millions of people every year are called bot flies.

Bot flies often live in temperate regions like Africa, parts of Asia and parts of South America especially in Brazil. Botflies can also be seen in other countries where they do not thrive, mainly because of travelers who went to infested areas and went back to their own countries. Adult botflies are non-parasitic, but their larvae are. They enter bodies of animals, usually cows and most of time bodies of human. They will stay there for weeks, burrowing into your flesh, developing a lump and eventually making a huge hole. Watch this example.

A botfly can easily be removed. Parasites like this burrow not too deep in the body so they can come up for air. For you to be able to get these gross parasites out of your body. you have to suffocate them by applying vaseline or petroleum jelly to the hole. In a few minutes time they will come up to resurface for air. But once their heads are out, they tend to come back down so you need a twizzer to pull them off, but be careful not to cut their body into pieces.

The holes will heal after removing the parasites but it is advisable to aid the healing with some antibiotics.
