Preventing Heat Stroke

By Jesse Aarons at 08/19/08 08:23

Summer is obviously the hottest part of the year. For some, summer is the ultimate vacation time and the time where they can go sun bathing or have non-stop swimming and island beach hopping.

But little did we know that summer is also a threat to our health. Summer can produce a hot weather than can be absorbed by our body. If not given proper attention, it can lead to hyperthermia or what we usually call heatstroke.

We have listed ways for you to prevent the scenario of having a heat stroke. If ever you still want to go out and enjoy summer, you can also use our list to lessen the heat and eventually lead you to a heatstroke-free summer.

  • If you are OK at staying indoors during summer, then just stay indoors, provided that your house has a good ventilation, best if you have an air conditioning system.
  • If you are going to go out, always make sure you are wearing comfortable dress for summer, lightweight and something that air even the lightest wind can penetrate and not those winter sweaters.
  • If you plan to use summer as a means for you to lose weight, do your fitness activities in the morning, when the sun is still not on its peak of giving the hottest part of the day. Wear the proper attires and always have a stock of drinkable water near to your exercising area.
  • If you plan to go out and do some outdoor activity, be sure to carry a lot of bottled water with you. Before starting any activity, drink a lot of water. While walking for long destinations, drink a lot of water as well. As opposed to what others think that drinking tea is good for summer, drink less of it, because tea can actually cause dehydration. Drink less coffee and other beverages that will promote dehydration.

  • Be sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day. It is recommended that you drink every 15 minutes. If you are playing a game, have a water break frequently. One indicator that you have enough body fluid is when your urine is pale white and not yellowish.
  • If possible, always wear a cap/hat/sombrero or bring an umbrella. Don't worry about fashion, there are a lot of umbrellas available that will fit your dress for the day. Worry more about your health.
