When did you start your website and why?
I started this site in 2005. I already had one website and was looking to expand my online publishing portfolio.
Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc
This site is basiccally an information resource on acne and rosacea. At the moment, I am making most money from paid advertising and affiliate programs, but I am in the process of developing an ebook. A newsletter is also in the works. I think it's important to collect the emails of leads, and to build an ongoing relationship with them.
What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?
That's changed a bit over the years. At first, the most difficult part was sorting through the conflicting information on how to build the best site to rank in the search engines, and what type of business model worked best. Now, it's just finding the time to implement what I've learnt whilst working at it part time.
What has been the easist part of operating your website?
Creating the content and maintaining the site. I use a great site builder, XSitePro, which takes care of a lot of the details like creating a site map automatically.
What was your biggest mistake?
Spreading my efforts too thin too quickly - creating too many sites in a relatively short space of time without getting each site to a certain level promotion wise first.
Who maintains your website and why?
I do. I enjoy the aspect of maintaining a site, and its easy to do.
Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?
It's given us more exposure, and helps me understand what clients want more easily.
What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?
I think it will only get bigger, but that the competition will increase exponentially with its' growth.
What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
There is so much information out there, and some of it is conflicting, so it is a little hard to sift through what works. You also have the instances of things that may work now, and things that are going to be more relevant in the future. I think both are important, but it becomes a matter of prioritizing your time and doing what is best for your business today, with an eye on growth.
What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?
They've definitely helped! But when the flow of traffic dwindles, that becomes a problem too. Fortunately, there are a number of different options out there today (web 2 media).
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Getting one way inbound links from a variety of sources. So, this would include the SEO friendly directories, but also article marketing, press releases, and the like.
What method has been least successful for promoting your website?
Reciprocal linking - it can still bring traffic, but it doesn't help with SEO, though some people still seem to think it does.
